Easy Science : Bubble Making

Kids love making stuff, especially if its cool, and something that they know you have bought before but can make yourself!

Coat Hangers, Straws, Joy, Glycerin, measuring cups, large container (to put everything in) and smallish container (i used mini pie tins)

Coat hangers are for making wands:

Straws are for wands too!

Mix 2/3 cup Joy, with 1/3 cup glycerin, and 1 QT water.

See how those Hospital Jugs come in handy? :)
We also use them for the bathtub. :)

Ready, Set, Blow!

 I couldn't help myself!

PS - these are not edible!

 oh dear!

These stay good for one week in the fridge!
Have fun!

Rocks

So sticking with the R theme, we collected "Rocks" and then washed them.

We used soap, strainers, scrub brushes, and towels.
This was a nice break from doing art! :)

Then we dried them and rolled them on an inclined plane too see which ones went faster.  They thought that was neat but wanted to keep washing them, so we did!

Something different that lasted an hour and a half!

White Mud

This is a fun and cheap and clean way to make a mess. :)

What you need... A roll of Toilet Paper, 6 cups of water, 2 Teaspoons of Detergent, and a bucket.
Step 1 - Tear ALL of the Toilet Paper into little pieces and put in your bucket.
I am serious all of it.
Step 2 - Pour the water and detergent over the Toilet Paper, then squish away.
The longer you play with it the more it breaks down, if you add less than six cups and only cover the Toilet Paper you can actually mold the Toilet Paper like play dough.
The kids liked it for awhile and then I put it away and before I dumped it let them play with it one more time and they had fun washing the tables with their lumps of Toilet Paper. Try it, it was fun to get down and dirty...I mean clean! :)

Dinosaur Week starts on Monday so we are moving out GIVEAWAY to next week...that is my hint to what the giveaway includes!

Money Clense

Since my boy still has croup and pink eye I have us ALL on house arrest until Wednesday. So
we decided to count how many "monies" were in sister's piggy bank. After counting and figuring out that she can't afford college ($1.67) we decided to clean them.

My son suggested we use soap and water. "Not Erked" (not worked) she said.

I said what else could we use? He said the dishwasher! So we put them in the dishwasher.

"Not Erked" said my daughter.

I said I have an idea. First, we mixed a 1/2 cup of white vinegar and a tablespoon of salt and stirred it up. She usually holds the measuring apparatus while he pours in the ingredients, and then dumps it in the bowl. Then she stirs them in the bowl.

Dropping the pennies into the vinegar and salt mixture.

Drying the pennies and admiring their shininess.

Here are our clean and shiny pennies! They actually don't look that great in the picture, but they are MUCH prettier than they were before we started. We also dropped a few quarters, nickels, and dimes into the mixture and talked about how the chemical reaction that cleans them only works with copper. That's probably over the head of a 2 year old, and a 1 year old, but I thought it was good to expose them to new information :)

This is them recounting to make sure they were all there...
3 quarters, 6 dimes, 1 nickel, 27 pennies.
It was fun, quick, easy, and educational! If you do this activity with a child under age 3, please be very careful since pennies are choking hazards for kids who still put thing in their mouths.

Bubble Machines

We hit Target this morning and I decided to just spend the day with the little boogers. We bought a fun toy and decided to play with it after nap.
Presenting the Bubble Master:As you can see it blows thousands of bubbles at one time. I played music really loud and let them dance and pop the bubbles. She loved it and was yelling "bubble-bubble" this is a game they play in Nursery and Gwen lets her participate even though she is still too little to go in.

I was also a little saddened when my boy said to me after it was over. "Oh man, mommy is done being fun. We have to wait for daddy to come home." I told him that I am always fun mommy and he said "Not when your tummy is so big." (I am 9 months pregnant)
Ouch. That hurt.
One day he will appreciate that I sacrificed my belly to bring him 2 sisters into this family!

*Side Note* It was 62 today and a beautiful day to wear shorts and tee shirts. I love the spring I hope it lasts! :) Original Post 2/24/09
