Summer Boredom Buster Kids - Writing!

A while ago, I was cleaning out my craft room and found these foam letters.

I can't remember why I bought them, but my daughters have begged to use them on their "projects."

So, that is what we did today! 

My little one would pick a letter, say it out loud, and then stick it on someone's paper.

 Then that kid would have to write 2 words that start with that letter.

 They loved this!

 We did it until the paper was filled up.

For my older son, I gave him a letter and he would have to come up with an alliteration for that letter.

He did 10 sentences and we called it good.

Just another way to stretch their minds, get their hands writing, and enjoy their imaginations!

Name Recognition #9

My intention was to work on lowercase letters, but this bunch of cuties preferred to copy the letters.

So, that is what we did.

I found these:

We put them in a BIG pile and then I passed them out. They lined them up on my sheets and wrote the letter under. After they wrote the letter, they got to eat the gummi letter!

This was another fun and quiet activity. We will do it again because gummi letters are awesome!

Magnet Letters!

Cheap Small Cookie Sheets and a Tub of These Foam Letters is all you need.

I chose foam because it is quiet.

First I let them free play. Then we sorted by color.

 Then we spelled our names. I made cards for them to copy the order of their names. We practiced first, middle, and last names. 

Sometimes we use these for Sunday centers. Sometimes we use these for quiet time.

I have even used them for spelling words.

Another fun activity that costs less than $16 for years of playtime.

Another use for these Magnets is match the sound to the letter game.

"This letter says Oooh"

Tot School/Preschool Activity

Need help recognizing and writing the alphabet? How about your child's name? Here is a perfect activity!

I prewrote the Alphabet (you can write their name) and have the kids paint with Q-Tips each letter.

This is a great activity that is little mess, and it is controlled.

It helps with pencil grip, name recognition, and focusing!

My 2 year old loved this activity as well. There are so many words you could have them paint.

Last name, sight words, spelling words, capitals, lowercases, etc.

Have fun with it and enjoy the quiet focused time with your kiddo! 

Twizzle Writing

This is a GREAT activity when you need your kids to be quiet for a good long while.

Grab some CLEAN kid scissors, and a package of pull and peel twizzlers.

Then print in a font large enough for them to see and use, words of your choice.

I did this at Thanksgiving time so we used Thanksgiving words. 

Later, I did it for the littler ones with their first names.

 Let the kids pull apart, and then they cut and mold to the letters.

We love to do this when friends are over too!

 The kids cut the strings, then added on to the letters.

The best part is that they get to eat their little pieces as a snack! 

So fun!

Name Recognition #4,#5 and #6

I have a list of skills that I expect my daughter to master before she is 3.5. Cutting with scissors successfully is in my top 3.  So I incorporated it into my lesson for the day.  I precut letters and bagged them for the activity.

They all remembered their FIRST letter so it was time to learn their name.  I had them sit and practice cutting so I could observe and determine what I needed to work on with each kid.  It was good for them to try it on their own first so here they are...

I got to teach 2 kids at a time a little bit about cutting with scissors and it is my goal to have them cutting beautifully by May! :)

While they were free cutting I made this for each kid.

Those are post it notes.
Then they got to glue on the letters where they belonged.  Most of the kids were so good at this, others knew the letters but needed help figuring out where it went.

I don't have a finished picture but they were really cute! :)

For snack I pre-scored the cheese with the letter of their name and let them finish the cut.

They had cheese and crackers.

They loved this activity!

Do you remember how I had their names on the wall?  This time we played Simon Says but changed it with their name. So Lindsey says touch your toes.  After every turn they had to pull their name off the wall and stick it to their shirt. Each kid got 3 turns.

This is how we kept track. :)

Another fun game, another successful day.  Try them yourself it was pretty fun!

Name Recognition #2 & #3

There is only one picture of this one, but I assure you all of the kids loved this activity.

I typed up their name and had letter stamps and they had to spell their names with the playdoh and stamps.  They would laugh and laugh when they figured out they needed the same letter like an E or an I it was so silly.

Then it was snack time.

I found AlphaBits cereal for $1.00 at Target and that sold me!

They had AlphaBits and Milk for snack and if they found their letter in their cup we would all clap.

So if A found an A we would all clap and cheer that she could find it herself.

It was tasty and fun!

Name Recognition #1

We are working on name recognition with the 2.5 year olds.  I made their first letter from WordArt and let the kids stamp them with the Bingo Daubers.

Then while they were drying we sang the Good Morning Song and when their name was called they had to stand up and spin around and then sit again so we could get to the next person.  They loved this.  Then I cut them out and glued them on black paper and then it was time for the game.

We had to see who's letter matched the picture...does K match B? No?  Who's name starts with K?  Keegan right!  Lets keep going...Does N match B? You get the idea.  They loved this game too.

My goal for today was to make sure that all of the kids knew the first letter of their name.

Healthy Kids Activities - Eyes #2

Today we talked more about the eye and how it works.
The little dark circle in the center of each of your eyes lets light in. It is called a pupil. If you are in a dark place where no lights at all are on, can you see anything? No, you can't because our eyes need light to be able to see! Once the light goes in, it hits a part inside at the back of your eye that is very sensitive to light. This part is called the retina. When light touches the retina, it makes an upside-down picture of whatever you are looking at. A large nerve called the optic nerve carries the image to your brain where it gets turned around so that you see it the right way instead of upside-down!

Then we talked about how some people who can't see are called blind.  What does that mean?

Then I went to THIS site and printed the Braille Alphabet.
To make the letters raised like Braille, put a drop of white glue over each black dot. When the glue is dry you will be able to feel the raised dots with your fingers. We also turned it upside down and poked holes so the raised parts were on the top.

Then we went to Old Chicago and asked to see the Braille Menu and we had the kids guess what each item was.

It taught them that even though we look alike all of us are very different inside. There was a girl there in a wheelchair and L asked me if she had broken legs, we then talked about how we need to learn about handicaps! :)

Three Little Pigs

Here is the link to print your own 3 Little Pig Story.

I opted to print it in black and white and color it myself, laminate it and then hot glue it on craft sticks so the kids could act it out. This picture is before I did all of that!

Then we talked about how pigs are dirty and messy and PINK! So we made tissue paper pigs today as the project!  Here is the shape I used, I just cut it and traced it on cardstock!

Then we glued Tissue Paper to it.

Then I mounted it on grass.

I did it this way so I could use it again for Farm Week in a few weeks. I also added a googly eye to this pig, but forgot to take a picture of it after it was added!
