Chickens and Chick-Hens

Sorry about the absence, my best friends father died and we have been hosts to their family for the entire week!
Not to mention my baby turned one! CRAZY! I have a 3 year old, a 2 year old and now a 1 year old.  I am surrounded by Toddlers and I wouldn't want it any other way! :)

I will be posting every day because we need to catch up!

Don't forget the Pigs from Pink Week, they are part of the farm week.

So now on to the Chickens.

Here is the link to the Print Out I printed out 8 as 3x5 prints so they were smaller.

Here is the link to The Little Red Hen

We read The Little Red Hen and then colored the hens/chick-hens. LOL
We identified parts of a chicken, and then cut out some hay.
Then glued our tie-dye chickens...
I lost the final picture it is on the other computer or my husbands laptop, because it certainly isn't on this laptop.  I will find it but this is the preliminary look.  It says something like "These two chickens say bock bock, they lay their eggs in the hay." We added eggs to the picture as well.  Picture it in your minds. :)

Day on the Farm

For REAL!

We went to a local Dairy supplier...we get out milk delivered round these parts!

They had an open petting farm for kids to see and feed animals with.

In Colorado you can go to White Fence Farms, or Karl's Dairy like we did. Longmont Dairy doesn't do tours anymore otherwise we would have gone there since that is who delivers our milk.
the best thing about this little trip is that it was FREE! Contact your local Dairys or
Farms and see if you can tour today!

Scrapped Farms

This is a really fun activity if you just want to get out aggression! LOL

First tear up a bunch of red paper.
L loved this. B was trying to keep it neat...I wonder where she gets it.
More tearing.
With the glue make a barn shape and then add the torn paper.
See?
I laminated it and then we added some grass and of course the wood slats.
Cute right?
We talked about farms and barns and what they do and who lives in them.
It was really neat to hear what they were coming up with. L was set on telling me that puppies live on a farm.  I think she is right!

Handprint Roosters

This week and next is Farm Week.

We started with reading about farms and what they do.

The first thing my son realized was that the farm day cannot begin without the rooster waking up the farmers and animals, so that is what we made first!
This is J she is 1 and was visiting us for the day.  She was so cute and didn't care that I was painting her hand.
until I got to her fingers and she thought it was totally weird -
but she was surprisingly cool about the whole thing.
Then we stamped it and I repeated it with the next 4 kids.
We made rooster sounds and then played a running game.
Cut them out and then glued a fence and a sun on the page.
J need a little help and actually preferred to watch on this one. Here is the end result.
It was great because each kids rooster looked so different!

Happy cock-a-doodle dooing!

Sand Blocks

Whew! What a crazy last two days, sorry I haven't posted!
Here is what you need:
Wood blocks, Sandpaper, Markers, Staple gun (not for the kids), and a bit o'glue.
Color the blocks with markers...in this house markers are big deal!
Measure then glue and staple to the sides.
PS, I am wearing lotion this time, but now I see a manicure is in my future! Yowza!
Ta-Da!
Now rub together...
We identified which sides to rub...
Then talked about rhythm, and beats.
Shake it people!

Picture me busting a move. Okay. Done. LOL.

Bull-Roarers

We are making Musical Instruments this week.

What is a Bull-roarer?
Known as the 'voice of God' to the Australian Aborigines and given to the males of the Clan at naming ceremonies or other auspicious occasions. Used as a 'talk back switch' to the Creator. To sound a Bullroarer it is swung lasso style which causes it to spin and make a 'humming type' sound.

We (my husband and I) studied these all weekend and decided to make them with the kids. If you knew us, this would make total sense to you. School Science Projects here we come! LOL

So we thought we could recreate the Bull-roarer sound with these simple around the house items...
Then we attatched the rubber bands to the spoons.
L was very good at this!
Then you add the yarn.
Here is a close up!
Yikes! someone needs lotion!
After spinning it around we realized we needed to add tape.
I mean seriously look at those Colorado dried hands. Yuck! I am so sorry!
Then add the rubber bands. Now lets go outside and try it...
Make sure there is lots of room.
better.
L wanted sunglasses!
It makes such a cool sound.

We then traded out the different sized rubber bands and took notes on the different sounds they made.
We came in and talked about how sound is made and how to make vibrations and waves.

Try this...it is fun and easy!  Click on the Music Tab to see what we have done in the past.
